Cheney Says Republicans Must Choose Between Trump and Truth

Republican Liz Cheney said that members of her party need to choose whether they are loyal to former President Donald Trump, or loyal to the constitution and to the truth. Being loyal to both is not possible, Cheney said.

In an interview with CBS News’s Margaret Brennan, Cheney said that the republican party needs to be grounded not the rule of law, and the fidelity of the constitution.

Brennan pointed to the fact that many Republican lawmakers are changing election laws to their own advantage, especially in states that tried to help Trump steal the election, but also in some where those attempts were repulsed. Trump followers have been viewing key election oversight posts in this year’s midterm elections.

Trump’s followers have spread conspiracy theories about the election, which have continuously been proven baseless. These allies and supporters have launched campaigns for several of these offices, both at the state level as well as local level, and experts say it’s in an obvious effort to steal control of the election machinery.

With Trump being expected to seek election once again in 2024, and his allies taking control of election machinery, they could leverage their position to block whoever stands against Trump from taking the office if they win and Trump loses.

Cheney said that too many members of the Republican Party are continuing efforts to enable Trump, or are trying to look the other way in hopes that he goes away on his own without having to take a stance. She said that some republicans are attempting to obstruct the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, a committee which Cheney sits on, but that the panel will not be deterred and the truth will be revealed.

There are only two republicans sat on the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection. Cheney, and Adam Kinzinger, from Illinois. Kinzinger is retiring this year come the November elections.

Cheney, from Wyoming, faces a primary challenger who is a staunch Trump supporter and has gained some support by doing Trump’s bidding. Cheney said that she is confident that Wyoming will not just choose loyalty to a single man, especially one as dangerous as Trump and that she will be re-elected.
