Your Daily Polling Update for Friday, August 27, 2021

BIDEN JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 47%
Up 2 from Wednesday

RON’S COMMENT: After a week of falling numbers, Biden gets a small uptick. Does this mean he’s bottomed out or is it just a brief respite? Stay tuned…. Today’s average is based on five polls, ranging from 41% (USA Today) to 50% (Politico). Biden’s disapproval rating averages 50% today (-1 from Wednesday).

VIRGINIA: GOVERNOR 2021
Among voters statewide

Terry McAuliffe (D) over Glenn Youngkin (R): +9 (50-41)

RON’S COMMENT: The two most recent polls give former governor McAuliffe an average lead of 8.5 points. Local pols believe attacks on Republican Youngkin are working and the Democratic lean of the state is beginning to show. The race has 10 weeks to go, so plenty can still happen…. This poll also finds that Democrat Hala Ayala leads the lieutenant governor’s race 52-42 and Democratic incumbent Mark Herring leads the AG’s race 53-41…. Democrats also win the generic ballot test for the House of Delegates 50-43…. From the poll report:

  • “McAuliffe is doing particularly well among women (55% to 36%) and younger voters (52% to 34%), while Youngkin has very solid support from the Republican base (95%). Regionally, Youngkin is strongest in South/Southwestern Virginia (53% to 37%), while McAuliffe does well in Northern Virginia (59% to 33%), the Richmond area (48% to 40%) and Hampton Roads (52% to 41%).”

BIDEN AND THE PANDEMIC
Among voters nationwide

How would you rate [President Joe Biden on his] handling of the coronavirus?

Excellent/good: 46%
Just fair/poor: 50%

RON’S COMMENT: Biden’s rating on the coronavirus leans negative in this poll…. 18% of Republicans, 79% of Democrats and 33% of independents rate Biden excellent or good on handling the coronavirus.

Coronavirus: 45%/33%
The economy: 38%/45%
National security: 35%/46%
Healthcare: 47%/35%
Immigration: 38%/44%
Climate change: 48%/28%
Education: 44%/36%

Protecting Medicare and Social Security: 45%/36%

RON’S COMMENT: Democrats in Congress lead on handling the coronavirus (+12), healthcare (+12), climate change (+20), education (+8) and Medicare and Social Security (+9). Republicans in Congress lead on the economy (+7), immigration (+6), national security (+11) and gun policy (+4)…. Political question: Will Republicans ever do anything on climate change, or will they continue to allow Democrats to own the issue?
