Chinese Foreign Ministry Blasts US for ‘Hegemonic’ Sanctions on Russia over Navalny

The US found itself target of China’s criticism again on Monday after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin denounced the latest round of US sanctions on Russia as baseless and unfair, CGTN reports.

The United States introduced on Friday sanctions against Russian entities and individuals suspected of involvement in the alleged poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny and the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Noting that it exposed Washington’s hegemonic thinking, Wang pointed that Chinese authorities regard the unilateral US sanctions against Russia over the alleged incident with Navalny baseless and unfair since they’ve been announced before the real state of affairs has been established.

He also emphasized that the Navalny case is an exclusively internal issue.

With regard to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline issue, Wang pointed the US is violating international law and basic norms of international relations by imposing sanctions against normal cooperation between two states in accordance with its laws.

It echoes Russian Ambassador to the US statement saying that the unilateral actions against the Nord Stream 2 project contradict the principle of free-market relations and calling them US’s attempt to gain a competitive advantage for its fuel and technology suppliers.

Wang called at the same time the international community to oppose the US’s consistent hegemonic thinking and hegemonic behavior are against peoples’ will.
