US-Germany Nord Stream 2 Deal Prompts Ukraine to Request Consultation with EU

Kiev invoked on Friday the Articles 274 and 378 of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement requesting consultations regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline deal between the US and Germany, EU Spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs Nabila Massrali informed as quoted by YJC.

Massrali said that the evoked articles refer to cooperation on infrastructure under the trade-related energy chapter of the DCFTA title and to energy cooperation under the title of economic and sectoral cooperation.

Ukraine hopes that the European Commission will stop the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. It strongly opposes the launch of the pipeline although US & Germany deal struck previously this week envisions unimpeded completion and launch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, supposedly protecting Ukraine’s interests at the same time.

Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned oil and gas company, condemned the agreement for the pipeline – a joint venture by Russia’s Gazprom and European energy giants – arguing that it is Russia’s “geopolitical weapon” and calling for pipeline’s operator, Nord Stream AG, to be slapped with US sanctions.
