GOPs’ political attacks on Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top government infectious-diseases expert, have gone into overdrive on Wednesday with senators Marsha Blackburn, Marco Rubio and Tom Cotton demanding his resignation amid controversy surrounding the origins of COVID-19 and release of a trove of Fauci’s emails last week, Fox News reports.
They claim Fauci he has lost the confidence of the Americas with his repeated evasions, misdirection, and politicized statements and, in case he doesn’t step down, the Republican senators are urging President Biden to fire him.
“For 16 months we have seen Dr. Fauci withhold information, dismiss plausible explanations of COVID’s origin, and outright lie to Congress. He is supposed to be a fact-based public health official, not a pundit distorting the truth to conform with his personal judgment,” Rubio told Fox News, adding that “if President Biden is committed to science and finding the truth about COVID, he needs to fire Fauci.”
Cotton and Blackburn shared similar opinions pointing that he needs to step down since of President Joe Biden should fire him with Dr. Fauci respondinf to criticisms, calling the attacks on him “attacks on science.”
“All of the things that I have spoken about consistently from the very beginning have been fundamentally based on science. Sometimes those things were inconvenient truths for people and there was pushback against me, so if you are trying to, you know, get at me as a public health official and a scientist, you’re really attacking not only Dr. Anthony Fauci, you’re attacking science. And anybody that looks at what is going on clearly sees that. Science and the truth are being attacked,” Fauci said during an interview with MSNBC’s Chuck Todd.
White House Coronavirus Task Force Director Jeffrey Zients credited Fauci with helping to “invent and invest in the mRNA of vaccine platform “over the last two decades .
“That’s how you got your vaccine in the first place. So, thank you, Dr. Fauci,” Zients said.
The White House and President Biden has been staunchly defending Fauci with White House press secretary Jen Psaki saying last week that Fauci has “been an undeniable asset in our country’s pandemic response,” and said she can’t imagine President Biden firing Fauci.
“He’s overseen management of multiple global health crises, and attacks launched on him are certainly something we wouldn’t stand by,” Psaki said, adding that she wouldn’t have more to add on the matter.
“Can you imagine any circumstance where President Biden would ever fire him?” Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked.
“No,” Psaki replied.
Meanwhile, GOP senators’ initiative received support from House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy while number of other House Republicans are demanding Fauci to testify before Congress on his emails, U.S.-funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and more.
