Chinese Embassy in U.S.: Politicising Origin Tracing of COVID-19 Hampers Investigations

China’s U.S. embassy warned that politicising the origin tracing of COVID-19 would make difficult further investigations and undermine global efforts to curb the pandemic, noting on its website that some political forces have involved themselves in political manipulation and blame game, Reuters reports.

The note came Wednesday evening after U.S. President Joe Biden ordered an urgent review of intelligence about where the virus emerged. The embassy in Washington noted in the statement that smear campaign and blame shifting are making a comeback with the conspiracy theory of lab leak resurfacing.

China, who is repeatedly denying that the Wuhan lab was responsible for leaking the virus of Covid-19, saying the U.S. are trying to cover up their own failures to contain the pandemic, has been under increased pressure to give more access after WHO announced a second phase of studies into the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus amid allegations that it leaked from a laboratory specializing in coronavirus research in the city of Wuhan.

The Embassy warned that politicizing origin tracing will seriously hamper international cooperation on the pandemic, making in harder to find the virus origin, and could give free rein to the political virus.

Yanzhong Huang, senior fellow for global health with the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, claims there’s nothing really new there to prove the hypothesis, saying the resurgence of the lab leak theory was prompted by China’s lack of openness.

The China-WHO study in March said that it was highly improbable that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from the lab, adding that it most likely spread from bats to humans via an as yet unidentified intermediary species.
