“Defund the police” issue has proved as dividing issue in New York City during the city’s first mayoral debate on Thursday, nearly a year after it became a rallying cry after George Floyd’s death, with mayoral candidate Andrew Yang claiming it’s the wrong approach for NYC, The Hill writes.
Yang, who is considered a more moderate candidate, said that the police are going to be a core way to address the public safety concerns that so many New Yorkers have and emphasized that defunding the police is the wrong approach for new city.
Yang said the first thing he will do as mayor is tell the police force that the city needs them and need them to do their jobs professionally, responsibly and justly.
Yang envisions 21st century form of policing – which includes an anti-violence and community safety unit that would work on getting the guns out and backed intelligence-led policing- that will monitor what guns are being used in other states that may enter NYC.
Thursday night’s event was the first of three official democratic primary debates and defunding the police was a prime topic of debate among the candidates on Thursday evening, along with public safety and policing.
