Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday responded to Rep. Liz Cheney telling that she’s not ruling out a presidential bid, New York Post reports. Trump called the Wyoming Republican a “warmongering fool” and said that she would “embarrass her family” with a 2024 run.
“Liz Cheney is polling sooo low in Wyoming, and has sooo little support, even from the Wyoming Republican Party, that she is looking for a way out of her Congressional race. Based on all polling, there is no way she can win. She’ll either be yet another lobbyist or maybe embarrass her family by running for President, in order to save face,” Trump said in a statement.
Trump added: “This warmongering fool wants to stay in the Middle East and Afghanistan for another 19 years, but doesn’t consider the big picture—Russia and China!”
Cheney, 54, told The Post in an exclusive interview this week that she may one day run for the White House.
“I’m not ruling anything in or out — ever is a long time,” she told The Post when asked if she would ever consider running in the future.
Trump said last week that he is “beyond seriously” considering another White House bid in 2024. He made the comments to Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“So I say this, I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously,” Trump said.
Donald Trump Jr. on Monday sniped at Cheney on Twitter: “I can only assume this means that Lincoln Project Liz is planning a primary challenge to Joe Biden for the Dem nomination because God knows she’d be lucky to break 5% running in the 2024 Republican primary.”
Cheney is the No. 3 House Republican and a daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney. She was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in January for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot that disrupted certification of President Biden’s victory.
In February, Cheney survived an effort by pro-Trump Republicans to eject her from her leadership position. Cheney prevailed in a 145-61 vote. Cheney previously clashed with Trump on Afghanistan war policy. In December he vetoed a $740 billion defense bill in part because of Cheney-pushed restrictions on removing troops from Afghanistan, Germany and South Korea.
Trump denounced Cheney by name during a speech to thousands of supporters near the White House immediately before the Capitol riot.
“We’ve got to get rid of the weak congresspeople, the ones that aren’t any good, the Liz Cheney’s of the world, we got to get rid of them. We got to get rid. You know, she never wants a soldier brought home.” Trump said.
