Biden’s New CBPP President, Sharon Parrott Says She Will Fight for Reducing Poverty, Inequality

Sharon Parrott, the new president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) in an interview with The Hill last week said that she will focus on reducing poverty and inequality, and pointed that these topics are the main priorities of the Democratic-majority Congress and President Biden.

“It is a moment where there is a willingness as a country to take action and to recognize that we need to take action not only to address the current crisis, both the health and economic crisis, but that we have really long-standing, important problems in our country that need addressing,” she said.

Parrott and the CBPP want to address important challenges including the lack of health insurance for millions of people in the U.S., racial and ethnic disparities and poverty.

“The Center works on issues that can make just an enormous difference in the lives of people who struggle to make ends meet. And so trying to push and advance that broaden opportunity, that address racial inequities and that help struggling families is an enormous responsibility that we take very, very seriously. I’m incredibly proud to get to lead the organization and its work,” said Parrott.

She said that the signing of the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion relief bill by President Biden last month is “a very important first step.”

“I think it sets a new standard for how we respond to crises,” she said.

Parrott pointed that many policies included in the relief package are short-term, and that long-term policies are needed to solve the addressed problems.

The new wide-range $2.25 trillion infrastructure plan that Biden presented earlier this year, is expected to be signed until the end of 2021, and the CBPP is hoping that the priorities like health care and child care will be included in the package.
