LUNCHTIME POLITICS: Biden on Immigration, Pandemic, Economy – Lara Trump – DeSantis Re-Elect

Your Daily Polling Update for Wednesday, March 31, 2021

BIDEN JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 54%
Down 1 from Thursday

RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on six polls, ranging from 48% (Rasmussen) to 60% (The Hill). Without these extremes it would be 53%…. Biden’s disapproval rating averages 43% today (+1 from Thursday).

NORTH CAROLINA: SENATE 2022
Among voters statewide

Republican Senate primary
Lara Trump: 27%
Pat McCrory: 17%
Mark Walker: 7%
Ted Budd 6%

Democratic Senate primary
Jeff Jackson: 13%
Cheri Beasley: 13%
Erica Smith: 11%
Richard Watkins: 4%

RON’S COMMENT: These candidates are vying for the seat of retiring Sen. Richard Burr (R)…. Lara Trump, a former TV producer and the ex-president’s daughter-in-law, leads the GOP primary field at this early stage. Ex-Gov. McCrory runs second and ex-U.S. Rep. Walker is third…. There’s a three-way race on the Democratic side: Jackson is a state senator, Beasley is former Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court and Smith is a former state senator. If either Beasley or Smith wins the seat, the state would have its first African American senator.

FLORIDA: GOVERNOR 2022
Among voters statewide

Gov. Ron DeSantis (D) over Nikki Fried (D): even (45-45)

RON’S COMMENT: Other polls have been showing DeSantis doing better than this one. DeSantis wins Republicans 76-17, but loses independents 46-42 and Democrats 72-15. Fried wins Hispanics 46-40…. Fried, the state’s Agriculture Commissioner, has not yet officially declared…. If DeSantis is re-elected, he’s a possible 2024 GOP presidential contender.

BIDEN’S RATINGS: PANDEMIC, ECONOMY, IMMIGRATION
Among voters nationwide

Biden’s handling of the pandemic
64% approve/29% disapprove

Biden’s handling of the economy
50% approve/42% disapprove

Biden’s handling of immigration
33% approve/54% disapprove

RON’S COMMENT: Voters give Biden strong ratings for his handling of the pandemic and net positive ratings on the economy. But immigration is another matter––with only a third of the electorate expressing approval for him on that issue. By party: 23% of Democrats, 89% of Republicans and 53% of independents disapprove of the president on immigration…. The border crisis is rapidly becoming the Biden administration’s Achilles heel. If it gets further out of hand, it could sink VP Harris’ presidential ambitions and cost Democrats crucial seats in 2022.
