Pelosi Says 9/11-Style Commission to Investigate Capitol Breach is ‘Next Step’

A 9/11 style commission to investigate the attack on Capitol on January 6 is the “next step” after the Senate impeachment trial concluded, said speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday, reported The Hill.

The impeachment trial and an initial review on how to prevent similar attacks in the future by Ret. Gen. Russell Honoré, make it “clear” that “we must get to the truth of how this happened,” said Pelosi in a Dear Colleague letter.

“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission,” she said.

The commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex” and “relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region,” said Pelosi.

In the weeks following the attack on the Capitol, requests for forming a commission like the one for the 9/11 attacks came out, given the consequences of the breach on the Capitol were severe, with five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer, and many injured.

The lawmakers who initiated the forming of such a commission want to know more about why the law enforcement agencies weren’t prepared to react and respond when the attack occurred.

In the days afterwards, several security leaders stepped down from their positions, including the House sergeant-at-arms, Senate sergeant-at-arms at the time, and the Capitol Police Chief.

Pelosi, who has served on both the House and Senate committee looking into 9/11 said that an independent commission to investigate what happened January 6, was a must.

“We will have an after-action review; there will be a commission,” she said last month.
