Steve Scalise to be Top Republican on New Coronavirus Committee

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy requested GOP Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., to head the Republicans on the new House Coronavirus select committee, saying the GOP will fight any effort by Democrats to launch “impeachment 2.0” against President Donald Trump, Fox News informed.

Fox News reported the appointment earlier Thursday and McCarthy publicly announced the appointment during his weekly press conference later Thursday.

McCarthy also appointed Reps. Jim Jordan, an aggressive Trump supporter from Ohio, Missouri’s Blaine Luetkemeyer, Indiana’s Jackie Walorski and Tennessee’s Mark Green, a physician.

“Despite the Democrats’ intentions, I know these members will honorably serve the American people and making sure this does not turn into another baseless partisan pursuit,” McCarthy said.

A divided House of Representatives voted April 23 to launch a new probe committee to monitor the implementation by Trump and his team of close to $3 trillion in coronavirus relief measures. Democratic leaders had been waiting for Republicans to name members to the panel, but Republicans had slammed the committee as being political and redundant to other oversight panels.

“What concerns me about this is not just the redundancy and waste of taxpayer money. It’s who was selected,” McCarthy said of the appointment of Clyburn and other Dem members he deemed too political.

Other Democratic Party members Pelosi appointed to the committee are California Rep. Maxine Waters, chairwoman of the Financial Service Committee; New York’s Carolyn Maloney, chairwoman of the Oversight Committee; and New York’s Nydia Velazquez, chairwoman of the Small Business Committee. She also appointed Reps. Andy Kim of New Jersey, Bill Foster of Maryland and Jamie Raskin of Maryland.
