RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on four polls. The range is 41% (Reuters) to 49% (Rasmussen). Without these extremes, it would still be 45%…. President Trump’s disapproval rating averages 53% today (+1 from yesterday), which is 8 points higher than his approval.

RON’S COMMENT: Whoa! This poll shows Sanders ahead in New Hampshire with Buttigieg second. Biden and Warren are tied for third and Klobuchar is showing momentum…. The poll report explains that, “Among those who supported Sanders in the 2016 primary, 34% still support him, 19% support Buttigieg, 15% support Warren and 9% support Biden. Among those who supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 primary, Biden leads with 24% support, followed by Buttigieg and Klobuchar tied at 19%, Warren with 15% and Sanders with 10%.”

RON’S COMMENT: The Economist and Marist polls show that the public is split on removing President Trump from office. When looking at these numbers, keep in mind that in the 2016 election, 46% of voters nationwide voted for Trump and 48% voted for Hillary Clinton…. The Economist survey finds that 82% of Democrats, 32% of independents and 8% of Republicans favor removal.

SENATE TRIAL

Witnesses: Do you think the U.S. Senate should or should not call additional witnesses to testify in the trial of Donald Trump?

RON’S COMMENT: There is solid majority support for calling additional witnesses, and 23% are not sure. 79% of Democrats and 30% of Republicans support calling additional witnesses. Also:

  • 50% of voters want to call John Bolton as a witness and 40% want to call Hunter Biden
  • 36% of voters approve of Speaker Pelosi’s delay sending the Senate the impeachment articles and 44% disapprove.

RON’S COMMENT: As you’d expect, Democrats are much more pessimistic than Republicans on the fairness of the Senate trial: 62% of Democrats and 32% of Republicans think the Senate will NOT conduct a fair and unbiased trial. 

SANCTIONS ON IRAN

Do you approve or disapprove of the U.S. imposing new sanctions on Iran?

Approve: 63%
Disapprove: 21%
Not sure: 16%

RON’S COMMENT: New sanctions gain majority approval. 87% of Republicans, 41% of Democrats and 55% of independents approve of imposing new sanctions. Age is a big factor: While 42% of Americans under 30 approve of the sanctions, 71% of those 65 and older approve.

TRUMP RE-NOMINATION

[Asked of Republicans]: Do you think the Republican party should nominate Donald Trump as the party’s candidate for president in 2020, or do you think the Republican party should nominate a different candidate for president in 2020?

Support Trump’s nomination: 87%
Support a different candidate: 11%

RON’S COMMENT: As we’ve seen many times before, Republicans overwhelmingly support Trump’s re-nomination. We’ll keep checking for any changes. 

BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY: U.S. RATINGS

RON’S COMMENT: Since early December, about seven weeks ago, favorable ratings of the British Royals are down across the board among Americans. Favorable ratings of the Queen and Prince Charles in the U.S. are each down 6 points, Duchess Megan (Markle) is down 7 points and Prince Harry is down 5 points. Even Prince William is down 4 points and Duchess Catherine (Middleton) is down 3 points. Prince Andrew, who has been caught up in the Jeffrey Epstein scandals, rates the lowest and is down 5 points since early December…. It should be noted that only 24% of Americans think the British Royal Family are good role models, 9% say they’re bad role models and 49% say neither good nor bad.
