Nurse who Killed 85 Patients Gets Life in Prison

Niel Hoegel, a former nurse from Germany shocked the whole world when it was found out that he killed 85 of his patients by injecting them with lethal drugs.

On Thursday, he earned life imprisonment for committing the biggest killing spree in Germany after World War 2.

According to the district court in Oldenburg, Niels Hoegel injected people with lethal drugs and then played the hero by appearing to struggle to revive them.

Judge Sebastian Buehrmann told Hoegel: “Your crimes are impossible to grasp. The human mind struggles to take in the sheer scale of these crimes,’’ Der Spiegel reports.

On Wednesday, Hoegel issued a court statement in which he apologized to the families of the victims, and asked for their forgiveness.

Hoegel has been charged for committing 100 murders between 2000 and 2005 and admitted 43 them while denying the rest. According to a court spokeswoman, he was acquitted of 15 of the charges. Hoegel has a history of convictions as he was sentenced for two murders back in 2015, Reuters reports.

Hoegel still has a chance to get out of prison after 15 years according to German law, but in a rare extreme case, he may spend the rest of his life behind bars. He was also banned from practicing nursing for life by the court.
