Cummings Hopes Cohen Will Testify Before Congress in January

Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings expressed hope over the weekend that the President’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen will testify before Congress in January after his party takes over the House.

“I certainly would like to see him come in the month of January,” Cummings said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Cummings is expected to become the next chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee next month. His request for testimony from Cohen would come shortly before the President’s former attorney is due to begin his three-year prison sentence in March.

Cummings further noted that testimony from Cohen would be similar to that of White House counsel John Dean against then-President Richard Nixon, which played a central role in his downfall. President Donald Trump’s former “fixer” has lately turned against him, saying he often covered his “dirty deeds.”

“I think this is a watershed moment. Mr. Cohen should come forward and let us know what he has on his mind,” Cummings said.

Cummings also said that he was open to the possibility of Cohen testifying at a different venue than his committee.

Meanwhile, President Trump called Cohen “a rat” and blasted the FBI for raiding his office a few months ago.

“Remember, Michael Cohen only became a ‘Rat’ after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started. They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server or Crooked’s office?” Trump tweeted Sunday.

Former FBI Director James Comey quickly responded to the tweet saying the search warrant was lawful, criticizing Republicans for not speaking up against the President’s apparent lie.

“This is from the President of our country, lying about the lawful execution of a search warrant issued by a federal judge. Shame on Republicans who don’t speak up at this moment — for the FBI, the rule of law, and the truth,” Comey’s tweet read.

Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, who is expected to take the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee in the next Congress, said last week that Cohen’s legal team has already been contacted about having Trump’s former lawyer testify.

“We are very eager to have him come and testify,” Schiff said.
