Senator Schatz: ‘No Republican is Willing to Tell Trump Space Force is Dumb Idea’

Democratic Senator Brian Schatz on Thursday ridiculed President Donald Trump’s “Space Force,” adding that the only reason why it’s moving forward is that Republicans won’t speak out against it.

“The VP just announced a new military branch – a ‘Space Force’, because no R is willing to tell POTUS it’s a dumb idea,” Schatz tweeted.

“Although ‘Space Force’ won’t happen, it’s dangerous to have a leader who cannot be talked out of crazy ideas,” he added, urging followers to elect Democrats in the November midterms.

“The VP just announced a new military branch – a ‘Space Force’, because no R is willing to tell POTUS it’s a dumb idea. Although ‘Space Force’ won’t happen, it’s dangerous to have a leader who cannot be talked out of crazy ideas. Elect D’s to check POTUS power,” Brian Schatz wrote on Twitter.

Schatz spoke against the Space Force after Vice President Pence announced at the Pentagon on Thursday that the administration is seeking a sixth branch of the military to be established by 2020.

“Our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already and the United States will not shrink from this challenge,” Pence said.

“History proves that peace only comes through strength, and in the realm of outer space, the United States Space Force will be that strength in the years ahead,” he added.

According to The Hill, the Department of Defense will release a report on Thursday detailing the specifics on how it will carry out Trump’s request for a Space Force.

Defense Secretary James Mattis stated that the report will reflect a “clear-eyed view” of the project, adding that space is “one of our vital national interests.”

Trump in June issued an order to the Pentagon to “immediately begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces.”

However, a Congressional action is needed to create an entirely new military branch.
