Trump: Blame Democrats, March 5 Is Coming up Fast

President Donald Trump used Twitter on Thursday night in order to undermine Democratic leaders for “not calling” him about a fix for the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“The Democrats just aren’t calling about DACA. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have to get moving fast, or they’ll disappoint you again, we have a great chance to make a deal or, blame the Dems! March 5th is coming up fast,” Trump tweeted.

Earlier the same day, Trump tweeted similar statement saying that the Democrats are doing nothing to protect the young immigrants covered by DACA.

Trump announced in September that he will end the program under which certain young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally when they were children are protected and allowed to stay and work in the U.S. The program is set to end in March unless Congress comes up with a bipartisan solution that will keep DACA running.

According to The Hill, a bipartisan group of senators led by Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Dick Durbin said last month they had reached a deal among themselves for an immigration deal that provided a fix for DACA as well as border security funding and changes to legal immigration. Trump later rejected that plan.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer then tried to negotiate a deal with Trump to pair a DACA fix with funding for a border wall, but those negotiations failed.

Last month, both Republicans and Democrats were not able to reach an agreement on a spending bill because a fix for DACA wasn’t included, which led to a three-day government shutdown.

The Hill reported that the White House unveiled details of Trump’s immigration plan last week. The plan includes a path to citizenship for 1.8 million immigrants who are covered by the DACA program, as well as for those who are eligible for DACA but did not apply.

The tricky part of Trump’s immigration plan is that in order for DACA to survive, he demands $25 billion to build his wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
