Attorneys in Russia Probe Say Trump Might Be Indicted by Mueller

President Donald Trump might be indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to statements given by two attorneys that are representing figures who are involved in Mueller’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential elections.

The two lawyers, one of which represents a Trump administration official, said in an interview with Politico that while they don’t know of any specific plans to bring charges against Trump, their experience with the law leads them to believe the president could be indicted for obstruction of justice.

According to The Hill, one of the attorneys partly based his prediction on his contacts with Mueller’s team.

“If I were a betting man, I’d bet against the president,” one of the lawyers said to Politico reporters.

The second lawyer, which represents the senior Trump official, commented on the issue, saying that Mueller could indict Trump to show how significant the findings from Mueller’s investigation are.

“It’s entirely possible that Mueller may go that route on the theory that, as an open question, it should be for the courts to decide,” the lawyer told Politico.

“Even if the indictment is dismissed, it puts maximum pressure on Congress to treat this with the independence and intellectual honesty that it will never, ever get,” the lawyer concluded.

The Hill also reported that many legal experts have doubted that Mueller will have the standing to bring charges against Trump, and such a move would likely create major constitutional questions.

For the last month, Mueller has been seeking an interview with the president. Although Trump in early January said that he would speak under oath with Mueller, he still has not done that, instead leaving the ultimate decision up to his lawyers.

John Dowd, one of Trump’s top lawyers, stated that he would make the final decision on whether Trump would be interviewed by the special counsel.
