Democrats Accuse Russia of “Relentless Assault” on Institutions Worldwide

The Kremlin referred on Thursday to a report that was allegedly published by Democratic U.S. lawmakers, in which they accuse Russia of meddling in the 2016 presidential election that contributed to damaging the bilateral relation and also damaged the United States as a nation.

On Wednesday, Democratic U.S. lawmakers publicly accused Russia of a “relentless assault” on institutions worldwide. The lawmakers then requested from President Donald Trump to treat the election interference as if it was a national crisis, Reuters reports.

The Democratic Party members on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee published a report where they described Russia’s actions to change global politics in their favor going back 20 years, meanwhile condemning President Trump for doing almost nothing about it.

Reuters also reported that Senator Ben Carding, the top Democrat on the committee, said on Wednesday that Russian’s President Vladimir Putin would “push as far as he’s allowed to push if we don’t push back.”

The Kremlin immediately responded to the allegations, denying all implications that Russia interferes in any foreign elections.

“With regards to this (anti-Russian) campaign, all we can do is express our regret and repeat that these accusations remain unfounded,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster stated that there were “initial signs” that Russia was interfering in the Mexican elections.

No further details were given on how Russia managed to influence the elections in Mexico but as Reuters reported some analysts see frontrunner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the leftist former mayor of Mexico City, as the Kremlin’s favorite given positive coverage he has received from Kremlin-backed media outlets like Sputnik and RT.

Same as with the other allegations Kremlin’s spokesman Peskov denied everything.

“This is incorrect, and importantly, unfounded,” Peskov commented on the accusation of Russia meddling in Mexico’s presidential elections.
