Trump Claims He Rejected Time’s ‘Person of the Year’

President Donald Trump said Friday that he turned down being named Time’s “Person of the Year” after the magazine only told him he “probably” would be selected, The Hill writes. Trump was previously named Time’s 2016 “Person of the Year” last December.

“Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!” Trump tweeted.

However, the President’s tweet follows an online readers’ poll that shows Trump being outperformed by singer Taylor Swift and San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz for this year’s honor.

The magazine on Friday denied Trump’s claims, saying that “he is incorrect” about how Time chooses it’s “Person of the Year”.

“The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year,” the magazine wrote on its official Twitter account. Time’s chief content officer, Alan Murray, also fired back at Trump from his own Twitter account.

At the time of his previous selection as “Person of the Year”, Time editor Nancy Gibbs explained that the then-president-elect was a polarizing figure that elicited opinions from just about everyone.

“For those who believe this is all for the better, Trump’s victory represents a long-overdue rebuke to an entrenched and arrogant governing class,” she said at the time.
