Kushner’s Contacts with Foreign Leaders Investigated by Mueller

According to The Wall Street Journal, Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigators are scrutinizing President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, in particular his communications with foreign leaders.

The report said investigators are looking into his involvement in the controversy revolving around a UN resolution criticizing the construction of Israeli settlements in disputed Palestinian territories. At the time, Trump, as president-elect, urged the U.S. to veto the resolution, which he considered “extremely unfair to all Israelis.”

However, the U.S. didn’t veto it, and the resolution was passed only days later. Israeli officials contacted a number of top officials, including Kushner, asking them to help block it, and Mueller’s office is now probing those communications. Investigators are also looking into the role Kushner had in arranging meetings and contacts with foreign leaders during Trump’s transition, The Hill reports.

At the beginning of this month, it was also reported that the White House senior advisor handed over documents to the special counsel who has begun investigating Kushner’s role in the president’s decision to remove former FBI Director James Comey.

Shortly before Trump took office, Kushner attended two meetings with prominent Russians, former Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and chairman of a Russian bank, Sergey Gorkov. During the presidential election, he also attended a meeting in the Trump Tower, along with Paul Manfort, Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer claiming to have dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Kushner has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, even though he has been condemned for omitting foreign contacts from his security clearance disclosure form. Kushner claimed the initial omission was due to “administrative error.”

The 1799 Logan Act prohibits Americans from communicating with foreign governments in order to impact governmental actions related to a dispute with the United States.
