North Korea Responds to Trump’s Speech

After President Donald Trump’s warning directed toward North Korea, Pyongyang responded in their common fierce fashion. Trump delivered his speech from to South Korea’s National Assembly, focusing on North Korea’s long history of human right’s abuse. However, the president abandoned its usual harsh rhetoric and invited Kim Jong-un to negotiate and offered North Korea “a path to much better future” it Pyongyang ended its nuclear program.

Trump warned North Korea not to underestimate the U.S., adding that mistaking its restraint for weakness was a “fatal miscalculation.” He also urged nations to abide by UN sanctions on Pyongyang.

North Korean officials called Trump “a mad dog” and said they didn’t “care about what he may utter because we’ve already heard enough.”

The officials again confirmed that North Korea was committed to building nuclear weapons in response to the threat posed by the U.S.’s “nuclear aircraft carriers and strategic bombers.” They maintained North Korea will not denuclearize under any circumstance.

Michael Hayden, former head of the CIA and NSA, said their refusal was not irrational because “they’ve seen what happens to states who have given up their nuclear programs and they’re trying to hold on to this as a matter of regime survival.”

Pyongyang has accused the United States of causing tensions and aggression to an extent not seen in over half a century, since the end of the Korean War.

North Korea has repeatedly pointed out that negotiating with the U.S. was out of the picture until the country completes its nuclear weapons program. The United States, on the other hand, is determined to stop the regime’s attempts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile which could reach the east coast of the U.S.

During South Korea’s visit, Trump was optimistic about forcing North Korea to terminate its nuclear program and called on China to help achieve their goal.
