Russian Lawyer Who Met Trump Jr. Seeks Return to U.S. to Defend Money Laundering Settlement

Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, who met with Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower during last year’s presidential campaign, is asking for permission to go back to the U.S. so that she could defend a claim by prosecutors that a company she represents didn’t pay a settlement in an international money laundering case, Reuters reports.

Prevezon Holdings Ltd, a Russian-controlled company, in May this year agreed to pay six million dollars to the U.S. government to settle a 230 million dollars Russian tax fraud case related to Hermitage Capital, an American fund that invested in Russia. The company asked a U.S. court for temporary immigration status for Veselnitskaya, who represents it.

Even though American prosecutors have said that the settlement payment was due on October 31, lawyers for Prevezon disagree. The news comes amid probes into the alleged Russian meddling in last year’s election and possible connections between Trump campaign and the Russians.

It was revealed last summer that Trump Jr. had accepted a meeting with Veselnitskaya after he was told he would receive information on Hillary Clinton. Trump Jr. said his meeting with the Russian lawyer produced no information useful to the Trump campaign.

“To the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, I believed that I should at least hear them out. Depending on what, if any, information they had, I could then consult with counsel to make an informed decision as to whether to give it further consideration,” he said.
