Trump Cites ‘Radical Islamic Terror’ in UK Crime Increase

President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that America must be kept safe and pointed to a study released Friday in Great Britain that shows an uptick in terrorism-related incidents.

“Just out report: ‘United Kingdom crime rises 13% annually amid spread of Radical Islamic terror.’ Not good, we must keep America safe!” Trump wrote.

Even though he did not specify to which report he was referring, the details matched a report from Britain’s Office of National Statistics. According to Politico, the report shows a 13% overall increase in crime in England and Wales and a 59% increase in murder offenses. The report’s murder statistics, as Daily Mail reports, have been spiked by terrorist attacks in London and Manchester and by the manslaughter charges brought linked to the Hillsborough Disaster, a 1989 overcrowding case at a soccer stadium that led to people being crushed and left 96 people dead. But, the number of murders climbed with those events excluded.

British forces registered 5.2 million crimes in the year to the end of June, which was up by 13% on the previous 12 months. The number of violent crimes rose to 1,229,260 cases this year. Last year their number was 1,033,719. An 19% increase was registered in the number of sexual offenses recorded in England and Wales.

The attacks in Europe have often been used by Trump as a proof that his national security policies are necessary.
