Trump ‘Likely Obstructed Justice’ Firing FBI Director

Analysis from the Brookings Institution say President Donald Trump may have obstructed justice by firing James Comey, the director of the FBI. On Thursday, Brookings released a report dealing with the issue, concluding that despite having the authority to fire Comey, Trump may have done it with the intention to prevent an ongoing investigation.

“Attempts to stop an investigation represent a common form of obstruction. Demanding the loyalty of an individual involved in an investigation, requesting that individual’s help to end the investigation, and then ultimately firing that person to accomplish that goal are the type of acts that have frequently resulted in obstruction convictions,” Brookings analysts said.

In case special counsel Robert Mueller concludes the same, says the analysis, the president may be impeached, although it does not contain any recommendations for that. While Comey was conducting the Russia investigation, Trump expressed his hope that he would drop it, which may be cause to investigate the president’s reasons for firing the FBI chief.

The analysts added “there is already evidence that his acts may have been done with an improper intent to prevent the investigation from uncovering damaging information about Trump, his campaign, his family, or his top aides.”
