Defense Secretary Tells U.S. Army to Prepare for War with North Korea

Defense Secretary James Mattis urged the U.S. Army “to be ready” for war with North Korea in case President Donald Trump orders military action. Mattis spoke at the Association of the United States convention where he said the Trump administration is still making efforts to come to a peaceful resolution to the issue of nuclear-armed North Korea, even though he believes “North Korean provocations [are] threatening regional and even global peace.”

He expressed his uncertainty at the outcome of the situation, despite “diplomacy-led effort to try to turn North Korea off its path.” Mattis added that it would be wise for the U.S. Army to prepare and make sure they have “options the president can employ, if needed.”

The defense secretary’s comments come at a time of strained relations with North Korea, which has announced its plans to continue conducting nuclear missile tests, even threatening to conduct one over the Pacific. His comments only reinforced World War III fears sparked by President Trump’s recent tweets in which he asserted Kim Jong Un’s regime violates agreements and “only one thing will work.”

U.S. troops have already staged several drills in South Korea, preparing for anticipated attacks from the North.
