Mayor of San Juan to Attend President Trump’s Briefing

Carmen Yulin Cruz is to attend an event which will take place during Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the devastated Puerto Rico. The president and San Juan mayor previously criticized one another, passing the blame for the inefficient and slow-paced response to the hurricane which destroyed the island.

“If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with inefficiency,” said Cruz, while President Trump condemned her alleged lack of leadership skills and claimed she wanted the U.S. government to do everything instead.

The president will travel to the ravaged city of San Juan together with the first lady, where he will be briefed regarding the relief efforts following the disastrous Maria Hurricane which hit the island several weeks ago. According to a White House spokesperson, Cruz is likely to be present at the briefing. The spokesperson added that White House officials have reached out to the San Juan mayor. Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that their focus for now “is to bring the mayor into the coordination efforts,” The Hill reports. She also expressed her hopes that Cruz will take part in the event and collaborate with them towards achieving a common goal.

The president and the first lady will also be seeing citizens of the area struck by the hurricane, while a meeting with the Governor of Puerto Rico Ricardo Rosello and Governor of the Virgin Islands Kenneth Mapp is also scheduled to take place.

After Puerto Rico was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria, a large portion of the population was left without power and water, as well as ruined infrastructure.
