Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Criticizes Trump on Inefficient Relief Efforts

In light of hurricane Maria, which hit Puerto Rico only a few weeks ago, President Donald Trump has failed to cope with the crisis, putting the blame on Carmen Yulin Cruz, the Mayor of San Juan. In his tweets, the president attacked the major of San Juan, suggesting that she has “poor leadership abilities.” This instance only showcases the president’s own ability to lead in a time of crisis, inducing serious criticism on his behalf. It also demonstrates his poor crisis management skills which could have more serious implication in the case of a national security crisis, as well as his lighthearted attitude towards his role of president.

Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer was one of the most vehement critics regarding relief efforts in Puerto Rico, which he characterizes as inadequate and “slow-footed.” He suggested that president Trump needs to stop the offensive tweets against mayor Cruz and take actions to alleviate the devastating consequences of the hurricane.

Trump is to arrive in Puerto Rico on Tuesday to assess the damage, though it has been suggested that he should have done that immediately after the hurricane struck, not two weeks after, reports CBS News. Schumer implied that when hurricane Sandy hit, the former president, Barrack Obama visited the site very soon after, while Trump did not make any such attempts.

Trump’s conduct may very well worsen national relations and also damage his political position. He has been accused of not taking a serious approach towards his presidential job, nor the insufficient relief efforts in Puerto Rico. In the 18 tweets he sent on the disaster that happened in Puerto Rico, President Trump continually refused to accept that were problems, regardless of the fact that numerous people on the island are left without water, power and basic supplies.
