South Korea Ready to Respond to North Korea Threats

A South Korea military official said on Wednesday Seoul is ready to take action against any provocation by North Korea, Reuters reports. The comments come after Pyongyang said plans to attack the waters near the U.S. territory of Guam will be completed by mid-August.

The South Korean official said North Korea’s statements regarding Guam challenge the alliance between Seoul and Washington. The developments follow a new Defense Intelligence Agency report that revealed Pyongyang had miniaturized a nuclear warhead to put on top of a ballistic missile.

President Donald Trump swiftly responded to the report, publicly warning North Korea to back down.

“He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before,” Trump said.

Tensions have been on the rise between U.S. allies and North Korea in the months since Pyongyang has continued to make developments in its nuclear weapons program. North Korea has launched two intercontinental ballistic missiles within the past month, the most recent one landing off of Japan’s waters.
